On the other hand, MP4 is a container standardized under MPEG-4 Part 14. It almost always wraps H.264 or H.265/HEVC video with AAC audio, the exact combination nearly every device, browser, and platform decodes without a plugin.
So converting MOV to MP4 usually means one of two things:
- Repackaging the same codec into a different wrapper (fast, no quality loss)
- Re-encoding the video into a new codec that fits inside MP4 (slower, some quality tradeoff)

Why Do You Need MP4 Instead of MOV?
MP4 wins on compatibility, and that’s the whole reason this conversion exists.
Here’s where MOV commonly breaks:
- Upload rejections. Video hosting platforms, ad networks, and CMS tools often whitelist MP4 and silently reject or fail to process anything else.
- Playback gaps. Many Android devices, smart TVs, and older browsers can’t decode a MOV file wrapping ProRes without extra codecs installed.

How Do You Convert MOV to MP4 on a Mac?

QuickTime re-encodes during export, so it’s not instant on longer files, but it’s the simplest route if you’re already on macOS.
Prefer iMovie? Import the clip, then go to File > Share > File, set the resolution and quality, and export. iMovie names its output .mov by default too. Rename the extension to .mp4, or verify the format dropdown before you export, since iMovie’s compression settings still produce an MP4-compatible H.264 stream underneath.
How Do You Convert MOV to MP4 Using VLC?
VLC is free, cross-platform, and already installed on millions of machines, and it’s the best no-cost option if you’re on Windows.
- Open VLC, then go to Media > Convert / Save.
- Click Add, select your MOV file, then click Convert / Save.
- Under Profile, choose Video - H.264 + MP3 (MP4) or a similar MP4 profile from the dropdown.
- Set your destination filename ending in .mp4.
- Click Start.
VLC re-encodes rather than remuxes, so expect it to take roughly as long as the video’s runtime, depending on your machine.
How Do You Convert MOV to MP4 With FFmpeg?
FFmpeg is the only method here that can convert MOV to MP4 without touching a single pixel, if your MOV file already contains H.264 video and AAC audio.
That’s because FFmpeg can remux instead of re-encode. Remuxing (also called transmuxing) just repackages the existing video and audio streams into a new container. Re-encoding decodes and recompresses them from scratch. Remuxing is instant and lossless; re-encoding takes real processing time and can introduce quality tradeoffs.
Run this command to remux:
ffmpeg -i input.mov -c:v copy -c:a copy output.mp4
The -c:v copy and -c:a copy flags tell FFmpeg to copy the video and audio streams as-is, skipping decode and re-encode entirely. This only works if the codecs inside your MOV are already MP4-compatible.
If your MOV wraps ProRes (common from a camera or Final Cut Pro), that command will fail or produce a broken file, because ProRes isn’t valid inside an MP4 container. You’ll need to re-encode instead:
ffmpeg -i input.mov -c:v libx264 -crf 18 -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.mp4
Here, -c:v libx264 re-encodes the video to H.264, and -crf 18 sets the quality level: lower numbers mean higher quality and bigger files, with 18 sitting close to visually lossless. -c:a aac re-encodes the audio to AAC at 192kbps.
Not sure which command you need? Run ffprobe input.mov first and check the codec listed next to the video stream. H.264 already in there means you can remux; anything else means you’re re-encoding.
How Do You Convert MOV to MP4 Online?
Browser-based converters skip installation entirely. You upload a file, wait for the conversion, and download the result.
- Open your converter of choice in a browser.
- Upload your MOV file.

CRF (Constant Rate Factor) controls quality when you’re re-encoding with H.264. It runs from 0 (lossless, enormous files) to 51 (unusable). CRF 18-23 is the practical range for most footage: 18 for near-lossless archival, 23 for a smaller file with no visible loss on typical screens.
Bitrate is your other lever, especially useful when a platform enforces a hard cap. A higher bitrate holds more detail per second of video at the cost of file size; a lower one shrinks the file but risks visible compression artifacts in high-motion scenes.
Two more settings worth setting deliberately:
- Codec choice: H.264 for maximum compatibility, H.265/HEVC if your destination supports it and you need smaller files at the same quality.
Faststart (-movflags +faststart in FFmpeg) moves the file’s metadata to the front, so video starts playing before the whole file downloads. Skip this and some players stall on load.
