A dedicated Castr transcoder named Stadium Main, in the Frankfurt region with its own ingest URL, receives an SRT contribution feed in H.265 at 1080i60 and 8 megabits per second. Copy from Input is switched off and the output is configured: H.264 codec, 1920 by 1080, deinterlaced to progressive at 30 frames per second, 5 megabits per second, with a Castr logo watermarked in the corner. The transcoded output feeds an existing live stream, Main Event Live, where adaptive bitrate delivery can be enabled separately.

A Castr transcoder runs separately from your live streams: you create it in the dashboard, name it, pick a region, and point your encoder at its dedicated ingest URL and stream key. Every control below is set per output, with a Copy from Input toggle when a setting should mirror the ingest. Premium, Ultra, and Events plans include one transcoder each, and the advanced controls scale by tier.

Resolution and frame rate

Set the output resolution anywhere from 320x240 up to 4K (3840x2160), and adjust the frame rate to what each destination requires.

Bitrate and volume

Set the video bitrate between 250 kbps and 15 Mbps, the audio bitrate between 32 and 320 kbps, and the output volume anywhere from 0 to 2 times the source level.

H.265 to H.264 conversion

Convert HEVC contribution into H.264 output that older devices and stricter platforms can decode.

Deinterlacing and interlacing

Turn interlaced broadcast video, sent as alternating fields, into progressive-scan frames for web players, or interlace a progressive feed for broadcast chains that require it.

Audio track splitting

Pick one track number out of a multi-track feed with the Filter Track control, then set that track's bitrate and volume, so the right language or commentary reaches each output.

Watermarking

Burn a logo into the transcoded stream itself, sized by the image you upload, so it stays visible wherever the output is delivered.

How cloud transcoding works

From contribution feed to finished output, step by step.

Live video transcoding on Castr runs between your encoder and your destinations. You push a feed in, define the output, and route the result into a Castr livestream for playback, multistreaming, and recording.

Feed the transcoder

  • 1. Create a transcoder

    Open the Transcoder menu in the dashboard, name the new transcoder, and select the region closest to your encoder.

  • 2. Push the stream

    Point your encoder at the transcoder's own ingest URL and stream key, separate from any livestream's key, and start the contribution feed.

  • 3. Start from the input

    Toggle Copy from Input to mirror the ingest settings, then override only what needs to change, like reducing an 8 Mbps contribution to a 5 Mbps output.

Define the output

  • Resolution and frame rate

    Set the output resolution between 320x240 and 3840x2160 and adjust the frame rate per output.

  • Video and audio bitrate

    Set the video bitrate between 250 and 15,000 kbps, the audio bitrate between 32 and 320 kbps, and the output volume from 0 to 2 times the source.

  • Broadcast conversions

    Convert H.265 to H.264 for compatibility, deinterlace fields into progressive frames for web playback, or interlace for broadcast chains.

    Deinterlacing and interlacing require Ultra or Events.

  • Audio and branding

    Filter a single audio track out of a multi-track feed with its own bitrate and volume, and burn in a watermark that renders at the size of the image you upload.

    Audio splitting and watermarking require Ultra or Events.

Route the result

  • Route to a livestream

    The transcoder's destination is one of your Castr livestreams, so the transcoded output flows into the embedded player, HLS playback, and multi-CDN delivery.

  • Multistream the result

    The transcoded stream multistreams like any other, to social platforms and custom endpoints, within your plan's account-wide destination limit.

  • Record it

    Live-to-VOD records up to 72 hours of the output, kept for three days, so the transcoded broadcast can become on-demand video.

  • Repeat per vendor

    When a second vendor requires a different output, run another transcoder with its own settings from the same master, for example one 4K 10 Mbps contribution feeding a 1080p60 output for one vendor and a 720p30 output for another.

    Plans include one transcoder, so ask the Castr team about additional allocation.

Premium, Ultra, and Events plans include one transcoder. H.265 to H.264 conversion starts on Premium, while audio splitting, deinterlacing, and watermarking start on Ultra.

Transcoder vs adaptive bitrate

Two kinds of live transcoding, and when to use each.

Castr transcodes in two places, and they work differently. A dedicated transcoder has its own region and ingest, and it re-encodes one feed into one output profile you define. Adaptive bitrate is a toggle inside a stream's settings that generates a ladder of renditions for the player. Many workflows use both.

Adaptive bitrate for viewers

  • One feed, many renditions

    Toggle Enable Adaptive Bitrate Transcoding in a stream's settings, and Castr transcodes the incoming feed into multiple bitrates while the player picks the best one each viewer's connection can sustain.

    Included with delivery on Premium and higher, limited to one stream per account.

  • A customizable ladder

    Enable or disable individual renditions, from Source down through 1080p, 720p, 480p, 360p, and 240p, and set each step's bitrate between 250 and 15,000 kbps. Adaptive bitrate must be on before the ladder can be edited.

    Bitrate ladder customization requires Ultra or Events.

  • Frame rate and audio options

    Choose a custom output frame rate of 25, 30, 50, or 60 fps, or pass the source rate through, and set the audio bitrate at 64, 128, 256, 320, or 512 kbps.

  • Best for audiences

    Use ABR when the goal is smooth playback for viewers on mixed devices and connections.

A custom transcoder for destinations

  • One feed, one exact output

    Define the precise resolution, bitrate, frame rate, and audio a destination requires, and the transcoder sends exactly that one profile, nothing more.

  • Format conversions

    H.265 down to H.264, interlaced fields to progressive frames or back, and multi-track audio filtered to a single track.

  • Burned-in branding

    The watermark is burned into the video itself, so it stays visible through restreaming and recording.

    Watermarking requires Ultra or Events.

  • Best for destinations

    Use a dedicated transcoder when a platform, vendor, or partner dictates the stream spec, or when the contribution format cannot be delivered as it arrives.

The two are not mutually exclusive. A common pipeline pushes the master feed through a custom transcoder to normalize it, then uses adaptive bitrate delivery to build the viewer-facing ladder.

The strongest fit is a team that receives feeds it does not fully control, from venues, partners, or remote cameras, and has to deliver a different resolution, bitrate, codec, or branding to its destinations. What is live transcoding?

Live transcoding converts a stream that is already encoded into different formats, resolutions, or bitrates in real time, while the broadcast is running. A typical case: a venue sends one 1080p60 H.265 feed at 8 Mbps, and viewers receive H.264 at a resolution and bitrate their devices and connections can handle.

What is the difference between transcoding and encoding?

Encoding happens once at the source, when your camera or software compresses raw video into a stream. Transcoding happens afterwards, converting that already-encoded stream into other formats, resolutions, or bitrates. In a Castr workflow, OBS, vMix, or a hardware encoder does the encoding, and the Castr transcoder re-encodes the result for delivery.

Why transcode a live stream?

Because the feed your encoder produces is rarely right for every destination. Transcoding solves four common mismatches: a codec some players cannot decode, a bitrate too high for parts of the audience, a resolution or frame rate a platform will not accept, and an unbranded video you want watermarked. One contribution feed goes in, and each destination gets output it can use.

What is a video transcoding server?

A video transcoding server receives an encoded stream and converts it into other formats in real time. Running your own transcoding video server means sizing hardware for every concurrent stream and keeping it healthy for the length of every broadcast. Castr replaces that with online video transcoding: create a transcoder in the dashboard, name it, pick the region closest to your encoder, point the encoder at the transcoder's ingest URL and stream key, and retire the transcode server.

What is adaptive bitrate (ABR) transcoding?

ABR transcoding turns one incoming stream into a ladder of renditions at different bitrates and resolutions, and the player switches between them as each viewer's connection changes. In Castr you switch it on per stream in the stream's Video Settings while the stream is offline, on Premium and higher plans, limited to one stream per account. Feed that stream at 4,000 to 5,000 kbps so the ladder has enough source quality for its lower renditions. Choosing exactly which renditions the ladder carries, and at what bitrate, requires Ultra or Events.

Which Castr plans include transcoding?

Starter and Standard do not include a transcoder. Premium, Ultra, and Events plans each include one, with H.265 to H.264 conversion and adaptive bitrate transcoding available from Premium. Audio splitting, deinterlacing and interlacing, watermarking, and custom bitrate ladders require Ultra or Events. If one transcoder is not enough, the Castr team can arrange additional transcoders for your account.

Can Castr add a watermark to a live stream?

Yes. Upload a logo in the transcoder's watermarking section and Castr burns it into the outgoing video, so it persists through restreaming and recording rather than being applied only in the player. The watermark renders at the size of the image you upload, so upload it at the size you want on screen. Watermarking requires an Ultra or Events plan.

How much does live stream transcoding cost?

Many video transcoding services bill per minute of processed video. Castr prices transcoding as part of a plan instead, so there is no separate transcoding invoice that grows with your broadcast hours. A custom transcoder is included from the Premium plan, and adaptive bitrate delivery also comes with Premium and higher plans.
