How to stream an IP camera

From the camera's RTSP URL to a live audience, step by step.

The whole setup happens in the Castr dashboard. There is no OBS, no capture hardware, and nothing running at the camera site once the feed connects.

Connect the camera

  • 1. Find the RTSP URL

    Every IP camera publishes its stream at an RTSP address, often ending in a path like /live, for example rtsp://cams.example.com:554/live. The format varies by manufacturer, so check the manual or the camera's admin interface. If the URL embeds credentials, keep it to a single @ symbol, because Castr rejects pull source URLs with more than one.

  • 2. Make it reachable

    Castr pulls the feed over the internet, so the RTSP URL must be reachable from outside your network. Port forwarding on the camera network is the usual approach.

    Closed network? Push RTMP or SRT from an on-site encoder instead.

  • 3. Add it as a pull source

    Create a stream, switch the mode from publish to pull, paste the RTSP URL, and save. When Castr connects, the camera feed starts playing in the dashboard preview.

    Camera sends PCMU audio? Use an rtsp2:// URL instead of rtsp:// and Castr transcodes the audio to AAC.

  • 4. Embed on your website

    The dashboard generates an embed URL and iframe widget for the HTML5 player automatically. Paste it into your page and visitors watch the camera live, on every plan.

  • 5. Restream to social platforms

    Add YouTube, Facebook, or Twitch as destinations, plus TikTok and Instagram over custom RTMP. Each platform receives a standard live broadcast, never a connection to the camera.

    Most cameras send video only, and social platforms reject silent streams. Add an audio track, even silent AAC, via the camera or an encoder first.

  • 6. Record and reuse

    Toggle recording on before the feed goes live. When a session ends, the recording appears in the Live-to-VOD tab. Keep it as a hosted video in your library or download the MP4.

How do I stream an IP camera to a website?

Can I stream RTSP to YouTube?

Yes. Castr pulls the camera's RTSP feed and restreams it to YouTube as a normal live broadcast, and the same feed can reach Facebook, Twitch, and custom RTMP or SRT destinations at the same time. YouTube never connects to the camera. It receives a standard stream from Castr. One caveat: most IP cameras send video only, and YouTube and Facebook reject streams without an audio track. Enable audio, even a silent AAC track, in the camera settings or through an on-site encoder before restreaming. Castr's own embedded player plays video-only feeds fine.

What RTSP URL do I need, and does the camera need port forwarding?

You need the camera's full RTSP address, which usually combines the camera's credentials, its address, port 554, and a path, for example rtsp://cams.example.com:554/live. The exact format varies by manufacturer, so check the camera manual or admin interface. Because Castr pulls the feed over the internet, that URL must be reachable from outside your network, which typically means setting up port forwarding on your router. If you cannot open the network, push the feed to Castr from an on-site encoder over RTMP or SRT instead.

Which IP cameras work with Castr?

Any camera that outputs an RTSP stream can be pulled, regardless of manufacturer, and that includes security cameras and CCTV encoders as long as they expose an RTSP URL Castr can reach. Cameras and gateways that push RTMP or SRT also connect. Confirm your exact device and stream settings during the trial before you commit.

How many cameras can I connect?

Each camera uses one live stream. Monthly plans include 2 streams on Starter and Standard, 5 on Premium, 10 on Ultra, and 15 on Events. Can an IP camera stream 24/7?

Yes. Persistent public webcams are a normal Castr workload, and the feed stays live as long as Castr can reach the camera's RTSP URL. For an always-on camera, plan bandwidth around continuous viewing hours rather than event-length sessions: one viewer watching nonstop at 2 Mbps uses about 21.6 GB per day, so Starter's 200 GB covers roughly nine days of a single constant viewer.
