Want to go LIVE on TikTok? You need more than a camera and something to say.

TikTok is one of the world’s most popular social media platforms, with more than 1 billion users worldwide. Its short-form videos, personalized recommendations, music, effects, and interactive tools keep attracting younger audiences. Among these features, TikTok LIVE gives creators a more direct way to connect with their followers and engage with viewers in real time.

But you can’t go LIVE as soon as you create a TikTok account. You first need to meet TikTok’s eligibility requirements, and 1,000 followers is the commonly cited threshold. Your follower count isn’t the only requirement, though. You also need to meet TikTok’s age requirement for LIVE, follow its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service, and meet any other conditions that apply to your account or region.

In this guide, we’ll explain how many followers you need to go LIVE on TikTok, what other requirements you need to meet, how to grow your follower count, and how to start a TikTok LIVE once you’re eligible.

How many followers do you need to go live on TikTok?

TikTok requires 1,000 followers to go live. The count is checked in real time, so 999 won’t work and the feature can disappear again if your following drops below the line.

Here’s the full eligibility picture at a glance:

RequirementThresholdNotes
Followers1,000Standard in the US, UK and EU. TikTok tests different numbers in some regions.
Age18 or older19 in South Korea. TikTok may ask you to verify before your first broadcast.
Account standingNo active violationsCommunity Guidelines strikes and LIVE restrictions both block access.
RegionLIVE available where you areLIVE and LIVE Gifts aren’t offered in every market.

What else do you need besides 1,000 followers?

Three conditions sit alongside the follower threshold, and TikTok checks all of them before showing you the LIVE option.

  • You must be 18 or older. TikTok’s Safety Center states the rule plainly: confirmed under-18 accounts lose LIVE access, and accounts confirmed under 13 get removed. Verification can mean a government ID, a selfie, a card authorization or facial age estimation, depending on your region.
  • Your account must be in good standing. Active Community Guidelines violations, a LIVE-specific restriction or a recent strike will all hide the button even at 5,000 followers.
  • LIVE must be available in your market. TikTok rolls LIVE and LIVE Gifts out region by region, so availability depends on where your account is registered rather than where you happen to be.

Gift eligibility runs on a separate track. You can hold 1,000 followers, go live, and still be unable to receive Gifts if you’re under 18 or streaming from a business account.

Can you go live on TikTok without 1,000 followers and how?

Not reliably, and not through any method you should trust. TikTok treats 1,000 as the standard gate, and the routes people promise below either aren’t real or put your account at risk.

Three exceptions genuinely exist:

  • A host can invite you on as a guest. Appearing on someone else’s broadcast puts you on screen without hosting your own, which is the one dependable way to be live on TikTok early.
  • TikTok tests lower thresholds in some markets. Access has appeared for accounts well under 1,000 in parts of Europe and Southeast Asia. Treat it as a test you might be included in, never as a plan.
  • The button sometimes arrives before you notice. TikTok grants access automatically once you qualify, so check Creator Tools rather than assuming.

Two routes get promoted heavily and both are bad advice:

  • Buying followers. TikTok’s Community Guidelines prohibit fake engagement, and its detection systems remove bought follows in bulk. The usual outcome is losing what you paid for, reduced reach in search and For You, and a monetization flag that costs you Gifts eligibility later.
  • Paying an agency to switch LIVE on. Services selling stream-key access for a fee or a revenue share tie your account to a third party you didn’t vet, and the access can be pulled as easily as it was granted.

The honest answer is that 1,000 followers is a low bar compared with every other TikTok monetization program, and reaching it legitimately takes weeks of consistent posting rather than months.

How do you get your first 1,000 followers on TikTok as a beginner?

There’s no shortcut, but 1,000 is the lowest bar TikTok sets anywhere, and a focused account clears it in weeks rather than months. Eleven habits move the number.

1. Pick one subject and stay on it

TikTok works out what your account is about from the videos that perform, then shows your next one to people who watched those. Post a recipe on Monday and a gadget review on Tuesday and you’ve given it nothing to learn from.

Your subject is also a promise. Someone who lands on your profile and sees five unrelated topics has no reason to expect anything specific from you tomorrow, and that’s what a follow is.

2. Post daily, and batch your filming to sustain it

Around 16,000 videos go up every minute according to Statista, so reach is a numbers game before it’s a quality game. One video a day for a month gives you 30 attempts at finding the format that works, and finding it is the whole job.

Daily posting burns people out inside a fortnight, which is why batching beats willpower. Block one afternoon, film six videos, and post them across the week. Consistency at one a day for two months beats five a day for one week and then nothing.

3. Earn the first two seconds

Open on the result, the claim or the strongest image you have. Introductions, logo stings and “hey guys” all spend the only attention you’re given before the swipe.

A sentence that creates a question works best, because the viewer stays to get the answer. Naming a mistake, stating a number, or showing the finished thing before you explain it all do the same job.

4. Stop guessing at video length

Buffer’s analysis of 1.1 million TikTok videos found that 86% of posts run under a minute, while videos over 60 seconds pick up at least 43.2% more reach and 63.8% more watch time than shorter ones (Buffer). Fewer creators compete in that lane, and longer videos give TikTok more watch time to measure.

That doesn’t mean pad everything to a minute. Completion rate is what the distribution actually rests on, so a 30-second video people finish beats a 90-second video they abandon. Make each video as long as the point needs and not a second longer, then check your average watch percentage and cut from there.

One practical reason to cross 60 seconds anyway: Creator Rewards only counts videos over a minute, so building the habit early pays off at 10,000 followers.

5. Caption every video

A large share of TikTok viewing happens muted, on commutes and in offices and anywhere a phone comes out in public. An uncaptioned talking-head video is invisible to those people.

Captions do a second job too. TikTok reads on-screen text when it decides what a video is about and which searches to surface it for, so captions feed discovery as well as accessibility. The in-app sticker menu generates and syncs them in seconds.

Take the trending sound or format and put your own subject inside it. Copying a trend exactly gets you views from people who wanted the original, and those viewers scroll on without following.

Find trends by watching your own For You feed rather than a trend-report website. Hear the same audio three or four times in a session and it’s still climbing. Save it then, not next week.

Pair each post with two or three broad hashtags and three or four specific to your subject. The broad ones widen the pool, the specific ones bring in the people who actually stay.

7. Reply to comments with videos

TikTok lets you turn any comment into a new post with the comment pinned on screen. Those videos arrive with built-in context and a question someone already wanted answered, which is easier than inventing a topic from nothing.

It also tells everyone else in your comments that questions get answered, and that’s what turns a comment section into a reason to come back.

8. Duet and stitch creators in your niche

Duet puts your video beside someone else’s; Stitch lets you clip their opening and add your response. Both put you in front of an audience that has already shown interest in your subject, which is the fastest borrowed reach available on the platform.

Spend fifteen minutes a day commenting on other videos in your niche as well. Creators notice who shows up consistently, and collaborations tend to start in comment sections rather than in DMs.

9. Build a series instead of one-off posts

A recurring format gives someone a reason to follow rather than just watch. Part 1 of anything converts better than a standalone video saying the same thing, because the viewer knows more is coming.

Formats that hold up as a series: a tutorial split into episodes, a weekly fixture posted at the same time, a build documented from scratch, or one viewer question answered per video. Label each episode in the caption and open with a one-line callback for people arriving late.

Don’t plan the whole run before you start. Post Part 1, see how it lands, and commit after.

10. End every video with one specific ask

Most viewers won’t follow unless you ask, and most creators never ask. Pick one action per video and match it to the signal you want:

  • “Follow for Part 2” drives follows, and works best on series videos.
  • “Save this for later” drives saves, which TikTok reads as a stronger signal than a like.
  • “Tell me yours in the comments” drives comments, which is what pushes a video further.
  • “Send this to someone who needs it” drives shares, which reaches past your own audience.

A vague “like and follow” gets ignored. One clear ask, every time, doesn’t.

11. Write a bio that says who the account is for

Your bio works every time someone lands on your profile, and most people write it about themselves. “Coffee lover and dog dad” tells a visitor nothing. “Espresso technique for home baristas” tells them exactly what following you get them.

Work one real search phrase into that sentence, since TikTok surfaces profiles in search results and not only individual videos. Use the same photo you use elsewhere so someone who found you on Instagram recognizes you instantly, and pin three videos that show a first-time visitor what the account does.

Then read your analytics once a week. Average watch time is the number that matters most, so find the videos that held people longest, work out what they had in common, and make more of those. Your audience will tell you what works faster than any guide can.

Four things cost you progress:

  • Follow-for-follow trades. They inflate the count with accounts that never watch, which weakens the watch-time signal your videos depend on.
  • Deleting videos that flopped. Underperforming posts still tell TikTok what your account is about, and a video can pick up weeks later.
  • Switching subjects every week. Each change resets what the recommendation system has learned about you.
  • The paid shortcuts covered above. Bought followers get purged, and the flag outlasts the followers.

Live streaming on other platforms helps here too, for reasons we’ll come back to further down.

Why can’t you go live on TikTok with 1,000 followers?

Six things block LIVE for accounts that have already cleared the follower threshold. Work down the list in order, because the first two cause most cases.

  1. Your age isn’t confirmed. If TikTok can’t verify you’re 18, it won’t grant LIVE even without an explicit rejection. Check your birthdate in Settings and complete any verification prompt.
  2. You have an active violation. Open Settings, then Account, then Account Status to see strikes and restrictions. A LIVE-specific restriction hides the feature entirely until it expires.
  3. Your follower count dipped. Purged bot accounts and unfollows can drop you under 1,000 without warning, and the check runs in real time.
  4. Your app is out of date. Update from the official store. Sideloaded or modified versions frequently lose access to LIVE features.
  5. You’re in a region where LIVE isn’t offered. The account region, not your current location, decides this.
  6. You’re using a business account. Some LIVE and gifting features are limited to personal accounts.

If all six check out and LIVE still isn’t showing, report it through the app rather than looking for a workaround. TikTok says accounts that meet the requirements and still can’t access LIVE should be reported.

How do you get live access on TikTok?

LIVE access switches on by itself once your account qualifies. There’s no application form for the standard route, so getting access means fixing whichever requirement you’re failing.

  1. Check your follower count. Confirm you’re at 1,000 or above right now, not at your peak.
  2. Confirm your age in Settings. Complete any verification prompt TikTok shows you.
  3. Open Account Status. Settings, then Account, then Account Status. Resolve or appeal anything listed there.
  4. Update the TikTok app from the App Store or Play Store.
  5. Look in the create menu. Tap the plus button and swipe across the capture modes. LIVE sits past the video and photo options.
  6. Check Creator Tools. If LIVE appears in your profile menu under Creator Tools, you have access even if you missed it in the create menu.

Access usually appears within a day of crossing 1,000 followers, and often within hours.

How do you start a TikTok LIVE once you’re eligible?

Going live from your phone takes five taps once the LIVE option appears in your account.

  1. Open the TikTok app and tap the plus button at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Swipe across the capture modes until you reach LIVE.
  3. Write a title that tells people what they’re walking into. “Hanging out” promises nothing.
  4. Pick a topic and add a cover image so your stream is easier to find in the LIVE feed.
  5. Tap Go LIVE.

Your broadcast starts immediately and your followers get a notification. Appoint a moderator before your first session, because reading chat, answering questions and removing trolls at once is more than one person can do well.

Streaming from a laptop with a real camera works differently, and that’s covered below.

How many followers do you need to make money on TikTok Live?

LIVE Gifts is TikTok’s lowest-barrier monetization program at 1,000 followers, the same threshold that opens the feature itself. Every other program asks for more.

ProgramFollowersAgeOther conditions
LIVE Gifts1,00018+Personal account, gifting available in your region
TikTok Shop affiliate1,000 to 5,00018+Varies by market
LIVE Subscription1,000+18+Consistent streaming history
Creator Rewards10,00018+100,000 video views in the last 30 days, videos over 1 minute

Passive streams don’t qualify. TikTok’s LIVE monetization guidelines rule out content that’s largely unattended or repetitive, so hitting 1,000 followers earns you the ability to receive Gifts rather than a guarantee of them.

How do you go live on TikTok from a desktop setup with Castr?

Castr sits between your encoder and TikTok, taking one feed in and pushing it out to TikTok and every other platform you broadcast to. Setup runs to six steps.

  1. Create a livestream in Castr and pick the ingest region closest to you.
  2. Connect your encoder. Copy Castr’s RTMP or SRT ingest URL and stream key into OBS Studio under Settings, then Stream, then Custom.
  3. Open TikTok LIVE Center in a browser and copy the Server URL and Stream Key.
  4. Add TikTok as a destination. In Castr’s Destinations tab, choose Add Destination, then Custom, then RTMP, and paste both values in.
  5. Match TikTok’s encoder settings. H.264 video, AAC audio, a vertical 1080x1920 canvas, constant bitrate around 4,000 to 6,000 kbps.
  6. Toggle your destinations on and start sending video.

Generate a fresh stream key before each broadcast. TikTok’s keys are typically single-session, and an expired one is the most common reason a desktop stream fails to connect.

Wrapping Up

TikTok opens LIVE at 1,000 followers, provided you’re 18, in good standing, and in a region where the feature runs. Castr connects to TikTok as a custom RTMP destination and streams the same broadcast to up to 30 platforms at once, recording each session as video you keep.

Start a 7-day Castr trial and go live on the platforms that will have you today.
