Vimeo On Demand Shutting Down: 10 Best Alternatives to Sell Your Videos

Vimeo On Demand shuts down November 20, 2026. Compare the 10 best Vimeo On Demand alternatives by price and fees, then migrate without losing your buyers.

In this article

In September 2025, Vimeo entered into a definitive agreement to be acquired by Bending Spoons for $1.38 billion, the Milan-based owner of Evernote, WeTransfer, and Brightcove. Since the deal, Vimeo has been reshaping its product lineup under new ownership.

One of those changes hits sellers directly. Vimeo On Demand, Vimeo’s built-in marketplace for selling and renting videos, shuts down for good on November 20, 2026, and storefronts already stopped taking new orders on September 21.

Your buyers face a bigger risk. Everyone who bought or rented from you loses access on November 20, and Vimeo only exports the emails of buyers who opted in to updates.

This blog explains what’s changing, how to keep selling without Vimeo On Demand, and which 10 alternatives to move to before the deadline.

Update: Vimeo On Demand Shutting Down

Vimeo is phasing out Vimeo On Demand in four stages, and three of them have already passed.

MilestoneDateStatus (October 2026)
New uploads blockedAugust 22, 2026Passed
New purchases and subscriptions blockedSeptember 21, 2026Passed
Final seller payouts processedSeptember 24, 2026Passed

Vimeo says the marketplace saw reduced activity over the years, so it’s moving resources to its core platform and to Vimeo OTT.

If buyers still watch your titles, you have until November 20 to move them.

What Was Vimeo On Demand?

Vimeo On Demand was a self-serve video marketplace that let creators sell, rent, and offer subscriptions to their videos directly to viewers. It ran for more than a decade and gave independent creators a paid storefront without a distributor in the middle.

vimeo on demand dashboard

You needed a paid Vimeo plan to open a store. You set your own prices, and Vimeo kept a share of each sale after transaction fees, with most of the revenue going to you.

Viewers watched their purchases on vimeo.com, in Vimeo’s apps, or through embeds on your own website.

What Is Replacing Vimeo On Demand?

Vimeo OTT is Vimeo’s official replacement for Vimeo On Demand. Vimeo’s seller FAQ names it as the recommended path for creators who want to keep selling inside the Vimeo ecosystem.

Vimeo also launched Vimeo Streaming in April 2025 as the next generation of its OTT platform, aimed at creators who want their own branded streaming service and apps.

Vimeo OTT has no upfront fee, but it charges on every sale:

  • Subscriptions (SVOD): $1 per subscriber per month, plus merchant fees of 2.5% + 30¢
  • Purchases and rentals (TVOD): 10% + 50¢ per transaction

Nothing moves over automatically. Vimeo calls the switch a fresh start: you can import your existing Vimeo videos, but buyers, subscribers, and purchase history stay behind.

You don’t have to stay with Vimeo. Any platform that sells video can replace Vimeo On Demand, and the 10 strongest options appear later in this guide. For hosting-only needs, see our broader list of Vimeo alternatives.

What Could You Do With Vimeo On Demand?

Vimeo On Demand bundled four selling tools into one dashboard, and your replacement should cover the ones you actually used.

Sell Videos Through One-Time Purchases

Buyers paid once and kept streaming access to a film, an episode, or a full season. You could also let buyers download the file, which is now the only way they keep a title after November 20.

Pricing was yours to set, including different prices for different countries.

Rent Videos for a Limited Time

Rentals gave viewers a cheaper, time-limited way to watch. You chose the rental window, and access ended automatically when it closed.

Rentals still running during the shutdown expire on their original schedule or on November 20, whichever comes first.

Create a Video Storefront

Every title or series got its own sales page with a trailer, poster art, a description, and bonus extras. You could take pre-orders, run promo codes, and embed the paid player on your own site.

Those pages, purchase flows, and embeds all go offline on November 20.

Monetize Films, Courses, and Other Video Content

Filmmakers sold features and documentaries, while instructors sold fitness classes, workshops, and courses. Series creators added subscriptions so fans paid once a month for every new episode.

Demand for paid video hasn’t gone anywhere. Parks Associates reported in 2025 that transactional video on demand rebounded and that 89% of US internet households subscribe to at least one streaming service.

That demand simply moves to a new storefront, whether that’s an OTT app or a video paywall on your own site.

What Happens to Vimeo On Demand Creators and Their Content?

Your videos survive the shutdown, but your storefront, sales, and buyer access don’t. Here’s what changes for you, based on Vimeo’s seller FAQ:

  • Your videos: Vimeo won’t delete them. They stay in your Vimeo account under your plan’s storage terms.
  • Your revenue: Sales stopped on September 21. Vimeo sent final payouts automatically by September 24, including balances below the usual payout threshold.
  • Your buyers: Streaming access to purchased and rented titles ends on November 20. Buyers keep a copy only if you enabled downloads, and Vimeo is emailing them about the shutdown directly.
  • Your storefront: VOD pages, purchase flows, and embeds go offline, so every link pointing to them breaks.
  • Your buyer list: Vimeo only exports viewers who opted in to updates. It doesn’t hand over full buyer lists for privacy reasons.

That last point is the one most sellers miss.

Vimeo will notify your buyers about your new home, but only if you move to Vimeo OTT. Anywhere else, you reach buyers through the opted-in list and your own channels.

How to Keep Selling Your Content Without Vimeo On Demand?

You keep selling by moving your files, buyer data, and storefront to a new platform before November 20, then giving past buyers free access there. Follow these six steps in order.

Step 1: Download Your Original Video Files

Download the master file of every title from your Vimeo library. Finish this before your Vimeo subscription renews or lapses, since your library follows your plan’s storage terms.

Save the extras too:

  • Trailers and bonus clips
  • Poster art and thumbnails
  • Caption files
  • Titles, descriptions, and prices

Step 2: Export Sales Data and Opted-In Buyer Emails

Export your sales history from Vimeo’s analytics dashboard before November 20. Then download your opted-in buyers as a CSV:

  1. Open your VOD page settings.
  2. Go to the Audience tab.
  3. Click Export email addresses under Download your fans’ email addresses.
  4. Accept the Acceptable Use Email Policy to start the download.

Step 3: Choose a Platform That Matches How You Sold

Pick the platform that supports your old pricing model, whether that’s purchases, rentals, or subscriptions. The criteria and the 10 alternatives below show which platforms fit each model.

Step 4: Rebuild Your Storefront and Set Your Prices

Upload your files, recreate each sales page with its trailer and poster, and set prices close to what buyers paid before. Embed the new player or checkout on your website so fans can buy without leaving it.

Step 5: Give Past Buyers Free Access

Grant free access to everyone who already paid you, using the opted-in list and any buyer records you kept. This step protects your reputation more than any other.

On Castr, an email access grant gives a buyer permanent free access with no second purchase. Vimeo OTT offers a similar complimentary-access option for creators who stay with Vimeo.

Replace every old Vimeo On Demand link and embed on your own website, and use 301 redirects for any of your own pages that changed. You can’t redirect vimeo.com URLs because you don’t control that domain.

Then email your opted-in buyers and post the new link on your social channels before November 20, while buyers still remember where they watched.

What to Look for in a Vimeo On Demand Alternative

The right Vimeo On Demand alternative matches how you sold, keeps more of each sale, and lets you restore past buyers. Check every platform against these seven criteria:

  • Monetization models: TVOD (transactional video on demand) charges viewers per title, as a purchase or rental. SVOD (subscription video on demand) charges a recurring fee for a library. Confirm the platform supports the model you used.
  • Fees and revenue share: Platforms charge a flat monthly fee, a cut of each sale, a per-subscriber fee, or a mix. Model your real monthly sales before you compare prices.
  • Storefront and branding: You want sales pages on your own domain or website, not a page that sends buyers to someone else’s brand.
  • Device reach: Web playback covers most buyers, while mobile and TV apps keep subscribers watching longer.
  • Access control: Passwords, geo-blocking, domain restrictions, and session limits stop one paid account from feeding a group chat.
  • Buyer migration tools: Free access grants and customer imports decide whether past buyers come back without paying twice.
  • Live streaming: If you run premieres, watch parties, or live classes, sell them on the same platform as your library.

Platforms that pass all seven are rare, so rank the criteria by what made you money on Vimeo On Demand. If live events matter to you, look for live streaming and VOD sales in one account.

What are the Best Alternatives to Vimeo On Demand?

These 10 platforms cover every Vimeo On Demand use case, from a single indie film to a full subscription channel. Prices reflect each platform’s published rates as of October 2026, so confirm them before you switch.

1. Castr: Best for Selling Live and On-Demand Video From One Dashboard

Castr is a live streaming and video hosting platform with a built-in paywall, so one account sells your film library, live premieres, and replays.

SpecCastr
Best forCreators who sell both live and recorded video
MonetizationPay-per-view on all plans; SVOD and TVOD on the Events plan
PricingStarter $19.99/mo · Standard $49.99/mo · Premium $199.99/mo · Ultra $349.99/mo · Events $749.99/mo (annual billing saves about 17%, roughly two months free)
Paywall commission18% Starter · 15% Standard · 7% Premium · 5% Ultra and Events
Storage100 GB on Starter, up to 3 TB on Ultra and Events
PaymentsPaid straight into your own Stripe account
DevicesWeb player on every plan; HLS URLs for Roku, Apple TV, and Fire TV from Premium; a branded web app on Events, plus iOS, Android, and 6 TV apps as paid add-ons
Live streamingYes, with multistreaming to 6 destinations on Starter and up to 30 on Ultra
Free trialYes

Castr’s pay-per-view paywall locks a live stream, a VOD folder, or a playlist behind one price, so selling a folder works like selling a full season. Buyers pay on a Protected Player Page, or you embed the paid player on your site.

Free Access Grants That Bring Past Buyers Back

An email access grant gives each Vimeo On Demand buyer permanent free access, and temporary access links expire on a date you set. Transactions and customer lists export as CSV files.

Secure Playback With Password, Geo, and Domain Controls

Password protection comes on every plan; geo-blocking and domain whitelisting start on Premium. Session limits stop account sharing, and a multi-CDN (Akamai, Fastly, CloudFront) delivers uploads auto-transcoded from 360p to 1080p.

Subscription and Rental Sales on the Events Plan

Events adds a white-label OTT service with SVOD and TVOD, a custom domain, and series organization, at a 5% commission with no per-subscriber fee. The web app launches in about 48 hours; iOS, Android, and TV apps take 30 to 90 days.

Watch out: The self-serve paywall is pay-per-view only, and uploads must be H.264 MP4 files. Compare all tiers on Castr plans.

2. Vimeo OTT: Best for Staying Inside the Vimeo Ecosystem

Vimeo OTT, whose next generation launched as Vimeo Streaming in April 2025, is Vimeo’s own path for former Vimeo On Demand sellers. Vimeo reports that creators earned more than $1 billion through its streaming services in the three years before the April 2025 launch.

SpecVimeo OTT
Best forSellers who want the least technical change
MonetizationSVOD, purchases, and rentals
PricingNo upfront or monthly software fee on the self-serve plan
Platform feeSubscriptions: $1 per subscriber per month + 2.5% + 30¢ · Purchases and rentals: 10% + 50¢ per transaction
Hidden costThe $1 fee still applies to subscribers on a 100%-off promo; annual subscribers cost $12 upfront
Migration helpImports existing Vimeo videos; Vimeo notifies your VOD buyers once your OTT site is live

Vimeo OTT charges nothing upfront, then takes a cut of every transaction. A subscriber paying $10 a month costs you $1 plus 2.5% + 30¢ in merchant fees, so 500 subscribers at $10 cost about $775 a month, or 15.5% of revenue.

One-time purchases and rentals cost 10% + 50¢ each, which means a $5 rental loses 20% of its price to fees.

Branded Apps Through Vimeo Streaming

Vimeo Streaming, launched in April 2025, adds branded mobile and TV apps, multilingual AI services, DRM, subscription tiers, and paywalled live events. Tubefilter reported that Vimeo’s app tools have powered more than 5,400 apps with over 13 million subscribers and $429 million in annual revenue.

Video Import and Buyer Notification From Vimeo On Demand

You connect your Vimeo account and import existing videos into your OTT site without re-uploading. Once the site is live, Vimeo Support emails your Vimeo On Demand buyers with your new link.

Vimeo still treats the move as a fresh start, so you re-grant access to past buyers with its complimentary-access tool.

Watch out: Buyers and purchase history don’t transfer, and per-subscriber fees climb with your audience. See how Castr and Vimeo OTT compare.

3. Uscreen: Best for Membership and Community-Driven Video Businesses

Uscreen builds video membership sites with community, live streaming, and marketing tools, which suits fitness and education creators paid monthly.

SpecUscreen
Best forSubscription-first creators who want a community
MonetizationSubscriptions and one-time purchases
PricingStarter $49/mo · Growth $199/mo ($149/mo annual) · App Essentials $499/mo ($449/mo annual) · Plus custom
Platform feeStarter: 10% on one-time sales, 100-subscriber cap · Growth: $1.99 per subscriber · App Essentials: $0.99 per subscriber
DevicesWeb on all plans; iOS and Android apps from App Essentials; TV apps on custom plans

Starter costs $49 a month but caps you at 100 subscribers and takes 10% of one-time sales. Growth removes the cap for $199 a month ($149 billed annually) plus $1.99 per subscriber, which pushes the bill to about $1,194 a month at 500 subscribers.

Community and Live Features Built Around Subscribers

Uscreen bundles video hosting, live streaming, a built-in community, and marketing automations in one dashboard. Members join discussions and live sessions inside your branded site instead of a third-party app.

Branded Apps on Higher Plans

Native iOS and Android apps start on App Essentials at $499 a month ($449 billed annually) plus $0.99 per subscriber. TV apps for Roku, Apple TV, Fire TV, Android TV, and Samsung TV require a custom plan.

Watch out: At 500 subscribers, Growth costs about $1,194 a month before payment processing.

4. Dacast: Best for Broadcasters Who Need DRM and a Built-In Paywall

Dacast, in business since 2008, pairs live streaming and VOD hosting with a paywall and DRM for on-demand content.

SpecDacast
Best forBroadcasters and organizations with security requirements
MonetizationPay-per-view, SVOD, and AVOD
PricingFrom $39/mo billed annually; paywall included from the Event plan ($63/mo, billed annually at $750/yr)
SecurityWidevine and FairPlay DRM, geo-restriction, domain restriction, expiring signed URLs

Free trial14 days, no credit card

Dacast’s paywall sells pay-per-view tickets, subscriptions, and ad-supported access, and you can mix models on individual videos. The paywall comes with the Event plan at $63 a month, billed annually.

DRM and Access Controls for Premium Content

Widevine and FairPlay DRM encrypt on-demand videos, which blocks unauthorized downloads and playback outside approved players. Geo-restriction, domain restriction, and expiring signed URLs add further layers.

Live Broadcasting With Multi-Protocol Ingest

Dacast accepts RTMP, SRT, and WebRTC streams, records live events to VOD, and simulcasts to other destinations. Its 14-day trial needs no credit card and includes 10 GB of bandwidth.

Watch out: Solo filmmakers with small libraries pay for broadcast features they may not use.

5. Muvi: Best for Enterprise-Grade Multi-Device OTT Apps

Muvi One launches a full white-label streaming service on web, mobile, and TV, with every major monetization model.

SpecMuvi One
Best forMedia companies building a Netflix-style service
MonetizationSVOD, TVOD, rentals, and AVOD
PricingStandard $399/mo ($339 annual) · Professional $1,499/mo ($1,274 annual) · Enterprise $3,900/mo ($3,315 annual)
Included usageStandard: 1 TB bandwidth, 1 TB storage, 200 GB encoding per month
Extra costsDRM at $0.01 per view; each additional app $254 to $424/mo (annual); overages billed per GB

Muvi One runs subscriptions, one-time purchases, rentals, and ad-supported video side by side, so you can sell a new film as a rental while older titles sit in a subscription library.

White-Label Apps Across Web, Mobile, and TV

Muvi builds branded apps for web, mobile, and major TV platforms on AWS infrastructure, with a no-code design studio for layouts. Each extra app costs $254 to $424 a month on annual billing.

Usage-Based Costs Beyond the Base Plan

Standard includes 1 TB of bandwidth, 1 TB of storage, and 200 GB of encoding per month, with higher tiers raising those limits up to 5 TB. Usage beyond the allowance is billed per GB, and DRM costs $0.01 per view.

Watch out: The entry price alone is 20 times Castr’s Starter plan.

6. YouTube: Best for Free Reach and Fan Memberships

YouTube is the world’s largest video platform, and its channel memberships let fans pay monthly for members-only videos. It can’t put a single film behind a paywall the way Vimeo On Demand did.

SpecYouTube
Best forCreators who already have a YouTube audience
MonetizationChannel memberships, ads, Super Chat and Super Thanks, YouTube Shopping
PricingFree
Revenue share70% of memberships and Super features · 55% of long-form ad revenue · 45% of Shorts ad revenue

Ad eligibility1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 watch hours in a year or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days

Memberships charge fans a monthly fee for perks such as members-only videos, badges, and early access. You can move a Vimeo On Demand series into a members-only playlist, but you can’t sell or rent one film to a non-member.

Revenue Splits by Income Type

You keep 70% of membership and Super Chat revenue and 55% of ad revenue on long-form videos. On a $4.99 membership, that’s up to about $3.49 per member each month, since YouTube deducts sales taxes and app-store fees before the split.

Eligibility Rules Changing in 2027

Starting February 1, 2027, new channels applying for ad revenue need 8,000 watch hours in a year, double today’s 4,000. Shorts-focused channels will need 20 million Shorts views in 90 days instead of 10 million.

Watch out: YouTube’s recommendations send your viewers to other channels after each video, and you never get your buyers’ email addresses.

7. Amazon Prime Video Direct: Best for Renting and Selling Films on a Major Storefront

Prime Video Direct lets rights holders, from independent filmmakers to studios, offer titles to rent or buy on Prime Video. It’s the closest big-brand match to Vimeo On Demand’s purchase and rental model.

SpecPrime Video Direct
Best forFeature films and series with festival, theatrical, or broadcast history
MonetizationRent, buy, and royalties when included with Prime
PricingFree; no setup or recurring charges

MarketplacesUS, UK, Germany, Austria, and Japan for rent or buy
DevicesFire TV, phones, tablets, game consoles, smart TVs, and the web
Delivery costsYou supply key art, closed captions, and files that meet Amazon’s specs

Approved titles appear on Prime Video next to studio releases, where buyers rent or purchase with their existing Amazon accounts. That one-click checkout removes the sign-up step that loses buyers on smaller storefronts.

Curated Licensing for Professional Titles

Amazon generally licenses professionally produced titles that played in theaters, aired on a major network, or were selected by a major festival. Every submission goes through manual and automated review, and Amazon can remove a title at any time.

Royalties for Prime-Included Titles

If you include a title with Prime instead of renting it, Amazon pays per hour streamed on a sliding scale. In the US, the rate runs from $0.01 to $0.12 per hour, based on how engaging your title is compared with others.

Watch out: Approval isn’t guaranteed, and Amazon, not you, owns the customer relationship.

8. Brightcove: Best for Enterprises Running Large Video Operations

Brightcove has powered enterprise video since 2004 for brands such as Marriott, Ford, and Johnson & Johnson. It’s built for media companies and large organizations, not solo sellers.

SpecBrightcove
Best forMedia companies, publishers, and large brands

Recent updates18 major platform enhancements in the second half of 2025

Brightcove’s Video Cloud handles hosting, players, analytics, and ad delivery for libraries with thousands of titles. Teams get governance tools and account management that self-serve platforms don’t offer.

AI Tools for Clips and Metadata

The AI Content Suite, generally available since January 2025, cuts clips, reframes video for vertical screens, and writes metadata. Brightcove’s 2026 roadmap adds improved captions, audio descriptions, and live clipping.

Ownership Shared With Vimeo

Bending Spoons, the company that owns Vimeo, also owns Brightcove. If Vimeo On Demand’s shutdown made you wary of one owner’s decisions, moving to Brightcove keeps you under the same parent.

Watch out: Enterprise onboarding rarely fits a November 20 deadline for a small catalog.

9. JW Player: Best for Publishers Monetizing Video With Ads and Subscriptions

JW Player began as an open-source video player in 2005 and was YouTube’s original player. It merged with Connatix in October 2024 to form JWP Connatix, a video and ad-tech company for publishers.

SpecJW Player

DevicesWeb, OTT, connected TV, and FAST channels

The Connatix merger added a full advertising stack, so publishers run ads across web players, connected TV, and FAST channels from one platform.

Paywalls and Subscriptions Through InPlayer

JW Player bought InPlayer to add paywalls, subscription management, payments, and viewer logins. That lets a publisher sell premium videos alongside ad-supported ones.

DRM and Broadcast-Grade Streaming

JW Player’s May 2021 acquisition of VUALTO brought DRM and broadcast-grade live streaming tools.

Watch out: Pricing is quote-based, and some long-time customers on review sites call it expensive for smaller catalogs.

10. Kaltura: Best for Education and Media Organizations Needing a Custom Platform

Kaltura, founded in 2006, headquartered in New York, and listed on Nasdaq, powers video for universities, enterprises, and media and telecom companies. It suits organizations that need a custom-built video platform, not a quick storefront.

SpecKaltura

ExtrasLive streaming, virtual classrooms, an events platform, and LMS integrations

Kaltura’s media products support subscriptions, transactional sales, and ad-supported viewing, with cloud DVR and linear channels for TV-style services. Telecom customers pay per end subscriber, while media customers pay a platform usage license.

Video for Learning and Events

Much of Kaltura’s business comes from education and enterprise video, including lecture capture, virtual classrooms, and large online events. That makes it a fit for schools selling course videos at scale.

Long Setup for TV Projects

Kaltura’s own filings say TV offerings typically take 6 to 12 months to implement, with higher upfront costs than its other products.

Watch out: You can’t launch a Kaltura TV service before November 20, so use a faster platform to keep buyers in the meantime.

Is Vimeo shutting down completely?

No. Only Vimeo On Demand closes on November 20, 2026, while Vimeo’s hosting plans and Vimeo OTT keep running.

Will buyers lose access to purchased Vimeo On Demand videos?

Yes. Streaming access ends on November 20, 2026, and buyers keep a copy only if the seller enabled downloads.

Can I transfer my Vimeo On Demand buyers to a new platform?

Partly. Vimeo exports only buyers who opted in to updates, so you re-grant access on your new platform, for example with Castr’s email access grants.

What is the cheapest alternative to Vimeo On Demand?

YouTube and Amazon Prime Video Direct cost nothing upfront, but YouTube can’t sell single titles and Amazon must approve your film first. Castr’s Starter plan costs $19.99/month with an 18% paywall commission, and that commission drops to 7% on Premium as your sales grow.

Wrapping Up

The right Vimeo On Demand alternative keeps your videos selling after the shutdown and gives every past buyer their access back before November 20. Castr handles both from one dashboard, with a pay-per-view paywall for live streams, VOD folders, and playlists, plus email access grants that restore every buyer you bring over from Vimeo without a second purchase.
